Daphne

Bernini's Daphne
in the Villa Borghese:
even as leaves, her fingers
still scream for the sky,
asking her daddy why
she grew roots and not wings.
I will never beg for bark,
no porcelain laurel casts my heart.
I've never had a nymphlike stride;
I welcome my man's love with pride.
