Carousel in Perugia

It was cold at night, by the carousel,
from the train to the mini-metro, on
the escalators through the Etruscan
ruins and finally back in Perugia. Sunset
was spent slinking home from Assisi,
Terni, Foligno, or somewhere, but
the lights and the music were a cool
welcome in molded plastic. One perfect
piece of pizza and a final spin around
the baroque layer cake fountain
send me humming through the curving
stone streets, back to sleep, to dreams,
to your warm, new words.
