They have seen it all, the curlicues
and creatures clinging to corners
of Italian edifices, lingering long
after their creators crumbled. Tyrants
and trysts have sought their shadows,
and I was just one more bundle of body
and swirl of earthly concerns. The safety
and freedom of knowing those stones
will stand, no matter what decisions
I make, allowed me to leave the loss behind
and leap toward life, toward you.
