Citta di Castello

There is a bench in a park in Citta
di Castello. In late fall you might see
a few teenagers kicking leaves
and coyly poking each other
with lacy little words and low
glances. They won't see you
any more than they notice the
artful crumble of the cathedral.
Buy a dry cappuccino
from a tiny old lady
even if it's after 10 a.m. and
she gives you a dark, suspicious
shrug. Sit on the bench at the end
of the city, all of Umbria stretched
out like a cat in the sun, and think
of me, in late November,
the way I thought of you.
